We are very excited to announce the birth of a gorgeous Sol Debut filly this morning at 12:38 AM. "Tessa" is a beautiful, almost solid bay (bay to turn grey) filly out of our foundation mare -- FS Betty Grable (Padrons Psyche x Kj Kalayla (*Karadjordje)). Tessa will be retained by Penny Lane Arabians as a replacement for her incredible nineteen year-old dam. Sol Debut went two-for-two for fillies this year... Pictures coming soon of both Sol Debut fillies!

What do I need to know to scribe at a show?

I offered to scribe for some sport horse classes at an upcoming show, but I've never done anything like this before. Anyone out there ever do this before? If so, I'd much appreciate any hints, tips, or comments you might throw out to me. I think it'll be mostly in hand classes.

I've always wanted to do something like this and really looking forward to it. Should be a great learning experience. But I have little idea as to what to expect. So if anyone would describe their experiences doing this, I'd appreciate it! :)

Scribing is pretty straight forward.

Take a look at the scoresheet in advance.

Ask the judge how they want to proceed. Most judges want you to follow them around while they examine the horse (but stay out of their way). Some do not.

Ask if they will be giving scores first or comments first. Most hunter judges tend to not give many comments. Dressage judges do.

On the score sheet, write the score in the score column EXCEPT for the gaits. Write the score to the left so the scorer has room to multiply the score times 2 and have a place to put the score.

Make sure the judge signs the score sheet before you hand it off to get scored.

Have a great time. It is a good learning experience.

And as a person who coordinates sport horse classes, thank you so much for volunteering!

Show up a few minutes earlier than the time they ask you to be there and let them know you're there ( it sucks to think your scribe might not show )

Tell the judge it's your first time

You will be on your feet in the ring make sure you have shoes that are comfortable and won't fill with dirt

If it's outside wear a sun hat but be sure it has a string so it doesn't blow off

Write as neatly as you can so the exhibitors can figure out the comments

It's terrible when you cant interpret the scribble.
I feel sorry for anyone that had to read one of the tests I scribed. I have the handwriting of a drunk chimpanzee.

Be careful with abbreviations, sometimes things that make sense when you write them leave the exhibitors scratching their heads. Have fun, it's a great learning experience.
What everyone has already said.

I went by the show grounds the other day and had a few folks bring their tests to me to decipher.

I was not scribing for a change but could read what was written due to being familiar with the judges comments.

DO try to write or print legibly!
Yikes! I'm about to forget something. Besides comfy shoes, how should I dress? I have a pair of khaki slacks and also a pair of black. Would either have people thinking I'm a fellow competitor? Or would jeans be appropriate?

It will be a small rated show.
Dressing like a competitor is better than jeans; either black or khaki would be just fine.

Slacks would be best and pick a shirt/blouse that will most comfortable for the conditions , it's ok if you look like a competitor , slacks and polo shirt is neat enough to convey respect and comfortable for you .
