We are very excited to announce the birth of a gorgeous Sol Debut filly this morning at 12:38 AM. "Tessa" is a beautiful, almost solid bay (bay to turn grey) filly out of our foundation mare -- FS Betty Grable (Padrons Psyche x Kj Kalayla (*Karadjordje)). Tessa will be retained by Penny Lane Arabians as a replacement for her incredible nineteen year-old dam. Sol Debut went two-for-two for fillies this year... Pictures coming soon of both Sol Debut fillies!

Questions About Stall Flooring

Hello all!

Building of my barn starts this week, weather permitting (which isn't looking good so far :bigemo_harabe_net-102: )

and I would like to know your thoughts about the stall savers (www.stallsavers.com) .

Does anyone have these or know someone that does?  And do they like them?

Or, as an alternative, what would you recommend for stall flooring?  I have 2 mares that will be foaling early summer and also my 2 boys and our cute little donkey too :)

Thank you in advance for all of your input :bigemo_harabe_net-108:

I've never used them, but I have one observation:

If water can move through them downwards, then it's pretty likely if there's enough rain or moisture build-up in the soil, it can come up through the mats too. Perhaps this is addressed in the video (which I can't play).
I wondered about that also, and am going to ask when I call about them. My excavator told me that I would have wonderful drainage in my stalls, and he is very good at what he does. After the 4 inches of rain last week and then 2 more days of rain and more on the way ( darn it all) , there is still no standing water where he has excavated for the barn. As the rest of the ground here is way oversaturated and squishes when we walk on it I figured that it would be too, but so far that is not the case and I hope it stays that way:)
It would be worth looking into. When we first built our barn we put in stall skins and they worked great for about 5 years, then they started breaking down and we ended up replacing them with regular mats. We used much less bedding with the stall skins and I never notice any amonia smell. If these work for you I may think about pulling up my mats and putting these in a couple stalls.

First off I haven't watched the video. I have seen these in a mega training barn and the concept was great. The only problem I saw in those stalls was how to "afix" the edges properly, so as to be neat and tidy..

In their video it says that if you don't have good drainage in the soil, to install crushed limestone before installing the stall mats for the best results.
I have stall skins in my barn, have had them for about 7 years. Unless your water table is really high, or the grade is not correct on your site, I doubt you would have water coming up. I dug the leach pits in most of my stall, I think there is a couple that I might have left without and to be honest, can't tell the difference. They drain very well and the amount of bedding that I go through is a fraction of what I did before the installation, and nothing compared to when I had a border insist on rubber mats. The biggest problem I've had is with installation. The molding they supply to you is plastic and in colder climates it gets brittle when it gets cold. I was having a hard time with the plastic being inflexible and hard to deal with when I was putting mine in and lucked out and saw a friends barn who had a young colt break up the molding in his stall in the winter. Decided to get some rough cut pine and use that as molding. Much easier and if I do get a kicker I can easily screw the wood back to the wall, where the plastic would have broken. That said if you are going this route and don't want to buy the molding I have enough here to do 7) 12 x 12; 2) 12 x 18 and 1) 12 x 20 stall with the hardware. You can have all you want if you pay the shipping :)

I am thinking about doing the stall skins as well. I have crushed limestone in mine and with the sawdust mixed in with it i have a packed hard surface. No issues with legs at all but they do wear spots in them! I have low spots in all my stalls and need to relevel them. I want to do that this year and put down some type of flooring that drains well but wont allow the ground water to come back up, and is easy to clean.

I'm looking at stall skins too, I'm tired of the mats slipping and curling. I wish I could invest in the stall matresses and stall skins over that but....yeah, when I can afford a $200,000 MD Barn.....sure......LOL!

lol dc I hear ya! I am remodeling the barn I have because well I cant afford to build a fancy one so I am making due! Honestly I think I am liking the way this is turning out! The one thing I would change is I wish it was closer to my house lol. Its a 1/4 mile walk to my barn! lol

LOL Starlite, mine is just your basic metal pole barn that I've got pipe corral stalls in with a dirt floor right now. I have tax return money ear marked for putting in the flooring and stall skins, I have the kits for the stalls already, just need to install them. I wanted to wait until I got the floor in and level though.

The barn that I have was built by my father inlaw and a friend. It started out as just an east wall. Then they finally built the rest of it. NONE of the stalls are square lol. The fronts have cattle panels for the bars. I am replacing those with actual bars. I have put slidding doors on all my stalls now. I am actually in the process of putting in a new tack room and wash / ready room. It's amazing how fast time flys when your doing all this work lol. I am putting in a round pen outside too! and new fencing. But all this is being done with recycled materials! so little to no cost to me.

If you have mats already, try stall mat klips http://stallmatklips.com/ a woman I show know from one of the arab circuits designed these.

VERY clever. Who is the person who developed them? I really hope she patented the idea (I didn't look to see if she had on the website). REALLY REALLY clever!
